The Kitchen Diary Day 0 and Day 1

I thought I'd give you a daily update on the progress of my kitchen refit.

Day 0
Here is the kitchen after I cleared everything away and my husband had removed a small wooden corner piece along with half the wall paper!

Day 1
Today after the joiner had removed the bookcase and units.  You can see three different phases of decoration here. The 'wood' effect panel board was there when we moved here.  I painted it yellow and 'sponged' blue and pale green onto it when the restof the kitchen walls were yellow.  Then 5 years ago we repainted in blue and I used the panels to create my 'bar-code' effect.

Come back tomorrow for a further update.

  1. I feel there might be quite a bit of "worse before it gets better" in store for us (and you!) over the next few days! Hope it all goes smoothly!

  2. Glad it has started Janice. What colour are you going to have when the kitchen has been put back again?

  3. it will be worse before it is better but at least it has started. It is going to be the same colour Tracey as the dining room is a lighter shade of the same blue and I'm not deforating both rooms!

  4. I love it when you uncover, like an archaeologist, the various eras a room has gone through. I don't envy you the upheaval.. but I so envy the you the excitement of making your perfect kitchen. I made mine, then moved away! Looking forward to more updates!

  6. I always loved removing wallpaper - never know what you are going to find underneath. I worked for a developer in London for several years and you would often find messages from couples written to each other on the walls in paint under all the layers of wallpaper, it seems to be thing that newlyweds always do when they get their first house. Some of these messages would have dated from the 40’s and 50’s. Always thought there is probably the plot of a chick-flick in there somewhere.

Demolition always brings up interesting stuff; I found the tail of a German incendiary bomb in the roof of a former embassy building in Mayfair, Roman glass in the mortar in a wall at the Royal Opera House, and we found a Roman sandal under some foundations in Spitalfields. Some of the lads started their own tradition of putting together a few little things (a cigarette or a joint, the Times crossword, and a few foreign coins to confuse people) in a reseal-able plastic bag and burying it in the mortar when they were putting in new Lintels, as a gift to future builders (we had a very sentimental workforce).

  9. OMG, I've been there. It can be an absolute nightmare, but the end result is worth it. Cant wait to see the finished product!

  10. Poor thing - I'd be lost without my kitchen, buut then just think of the wonderful new kitchen you'll get at the end of it all. How long will it take to get your new kitchen sorted?
