Old Recipes

I love old cookery books and cuttings. I've been collecting recipes since I was about 14 years old. But these ones come from my DH's grandmother who cut out and collected all sorts of recipes and household tips and hints. This page is from a book called Household Cookery and Laundry Work by Mrs Black.

Aunt Kate's Ration Recipe Book was given free with the People's Friend, we have quite a lot of those free books. I keep a lot of the free books that come with BBC Good Food so I guess nothing changes.

Mary Lou's Plain and Fancy Baking Book is probably my favourite, it's from the Weekly Welcome, October 17th, 1931 and i have Mary Lou's Candy Book too.

30 years on and my grandmother was reading Elizabeth David's French country cooking, this copy is from 1963.
Let me know if you would like me to feature any recipes from these or other old books, this is a tiny sample of the cuttings and old books I have.

Soup

I am very fortunate to have a neighbour who grows lots of veg and shows it in the local village shows. There is always too much for him and his wife, so they bring me bags of lovely veg.
For the soup:
Two leeks
1 large parsnip
3 carrots
one potato
Parsley stalks (I had some left over from the vegetable frittata I made on Friday)
Peel the vegetables and chop roughly. Saute in a little vegetable oil, then cover with boiling water from the kettle and a tablespoon of Marigold Vegetable Bouillon or other stock.
I use my pressure cooker and cook for about 20 minutes, if you don't have one, then just cook until all the veg are soft.
Whizz with a handheld blender until smooth and add a little milk or stock until it is of the consistency you want.

Frozen Banana & Peanut Butter Cheesecake

I made this cheesecake for my OH's birthday because he loves peanut butter. I've been going on about it to all my friends - it was so delicious, I can't recommend it enough if you love peanut butter and cheesecake. You can see the recipe here: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3722/frozen-banana-and-peanut-butter-cheesecake.jsp

Yep, that's right it was 624 calories a slice! Everyone was laughing at me because I used Philidelphia Light and Half Fat digestive biscuits - but you know that every calorie saved means you can have another slice.

I love food!

Yes, I really love food and lots of different food. Just as well I like cooking too!

I'm going to share some of my favourite recipes here and tell you all about what I am cooking and eating. Maybe some cookery book reviews too, I have too many cookbooks and have a tendency to do too much reading and not enough cooking.
